CrowdStrike Cybersecurity Software Disruption

CrowdStrike's recent system update caused significant disruptions on Windows devices, leading to multiple crashes. Although the company has rolled back the update, the outage is still impacting industries such as shipping, logistics, and freight. Major delays in both passenger and cargo flights occurred last week and may continue to be felt in the following days and weeks. While ports in Georgia, Baltimore, Seattle, Virginia, New York, and New Jersey remain unaffected, the major shipping point in Port Houston was closed until late Friday morning. The backlog in shipping schedules is likely to cause extended delays. Industries should brace for ongoing disruptions as they work to realign with original timelines.

New Sea Container Terminal to Transform Trade on Lake Michigan

The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor have received approval to build a new sea container terminal on Lake Michigan in Indiana. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with operations expected to start as early as 2026. This will be the first all-water route for ocean shipments in the region, benefiting industries such as manufacturing, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, food products, high-protein soybeans, specialty corn, and hardwoods in the greater Chicago area. The new terminal promises to diversify market access, reduce shipment delays, and lower the overall carbon footprint for Midwest trade.
